MEHAO LAKE : An unexplored tourist destination

The Mehao Lake, a Natural Lake amidst lush green forest is located in the heart of Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary in Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh. It’s water surface area is approximately 100 hectare with a periphery of about 4800 meter. Little below is another small lake called Mini Mehao lake which is 2.50 hectare in area. The Lakes is situated just 14 kms away from Roing, the district headquarter of Lower Dibang Valley district.

Mehao lake is an upland lake situated at an altitude of 1640 mtr above Mean Sea Level with GPS co-ordinates N 28°08’51.87” & E 95°56’39.47”.  It resembles a bowl on the hill top on Google Earth. It is an oligotrophic (low nutrient) lake and the water of the lake is crystal clear.

The area is very rich in flora  and  fauna as the Mehao Wild Life Sanctuary is covered with dense forest. The common associate of tree species found in this Wildlife Sanctuary are- Alnusnepalensis,  populus ambeli, Castanopsis indica, C.spicata, Wuercus griffithii, Q.amellosa, Betula alnoides, Albizia mollis, Michelia spp., Mangolia spp. etc.

The wild mammals like Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat, Spotted Linsang, Common Mongoose, Wild Dog, Jackal, Indian Porcupine, Himalayan Black Beer, Assamese Macaque, Stump tailed macaque, Slow Loris, Hoolock gibbon, Sambar and Barking Deer and birds like Great Hornbill, Goosander, Large cormorant, Mallard, Godwall, Cotton teal, Three toed forest kingfisher, etc. are found in this sanctuary. The migratory ducks has also been observed during the winter seasons in the Lake.

However, there is no road connectivity to the Lake as any kind of developmental activities that leads to deforestation is prohibited in the area without prior clearance/approval from the Wildlife Department. There are two ways to visit to the Mehao Lake, one is through the bank of Eze/Deopani River covering 14 km from Roing and has to climb a steeper slope to reach to the lake. Another is via Abango Village about 12 km from Roing by leaving the vehicle at last stop somewhere 5 km further from the village at foothills and then trekking for another 14 km on foot before reaching the Lake. To make full survey or thorough view of the Lake one has to go fully prepared with light beddings and materials for one night halt as there is no provision for lodging in the vicinity.   One old SPT Type Tourist Lodge constructed by the Department of Wildlife way back in the year 2003-2004 is in dilapidated condition and need major renovation to make it worth staying.

The Lake, if given proper attention with well maintained treks, if not motorable roads and infrastructure at least for overnight halt is a potential tourist destination for adventure tourism, birds and animal lovers, trekkers and for sightseeing. (Contributed by Ajay Saring, DIPRO Roing.)

The study, published by experts from Switzerland, the US and Vietnam, examined changing groundwater flow over one decade in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi.

Arsenic, one of the most common inorganic contaminants found in drinking water worldwide, can be highly toxic to humans. Even in low concentrations arsenic can damage health if ingested over long periods. It is associated with cancer of the skin, lungs, bladder and kidneys.

At some sites in Vietnam investigated for the study, arsenic concentrations were up to 50 times higher than the internationally recommended limit of 10 micrograms of arsenic per litre.

The study focused on a village on the outskirts of Hanoi, Van Phuc, where residents have private wells. Although the sample was small, it is believed similar processes may be underway elsewhere in large Asian cities that are pumping more groundwater, said a co-author Michael Berg, a geochemist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology.

Grasp the factual gist of article

Dear Editor,

This is in response to a readers forum item written by one Jamoh duo titled-” Will gender discrimination ever end?” which appeared in the 16th of September 2013 issue of the Arunachal times. Couple of days after publication of the article and amidst appreciation from all corners, yet I have been exclusively subjected to criticism by the Jamoh duo. I wish, the duo before portraying me as bizarre thinker, narrow minded, booster of “Gali ka Goonda” and gender discriminator, should have read carefully and brought out the factual gist of the article. In my article I wrote against the rapist not the victim. This can be clarified from the facts of justifications as follows.

1.       If at all I was interpreting parents that girls are raped because of their short dresses and promiscuous behavior, then my article would have been titled “TEACHING OUR DAUGHTERS HOW NOT TO BE RAPED “ but  the title of the article was “SHOULD WE BE TEACHING OUR DAUGHTERS HOW NOT TO BE RAPED? Whereby, rather I have questioned the society-instead of educating good moral values to our sons that they do not rape people, should we be teaching our daughters how not to be raped?

2.      I never interpreted as wearing short outfits, drinking and night outs and promiscuous behavior of the girl, responsible for getting raped. Rather, I interpreted that although girls make poor choices, girls can’t be held responsible for a boy’s poor choice. please refer para 7, 8,15 and 16(10) of  page 3,

Para-7; “I get that the girl made some poor choices. I get that she may have a history of being promiscuous. I get that she’s been drunk before. I get that she was dressed provocatively. But none of those, individually or in the collective, is justification for rape”.

Para-8; “Everyday people make poor driving choices. But if they’re hit by a drunk driver no one says they deserve it. Lots of people forget to set their house alarm, drive fancy cars, and buy expensive things. But who says they flaunted their wealth and therefore it’s their fault they were robbed? Both of these sound absurd. It’s not their fault, it’s the drunk driver or the robber’s responsibility”.

Para-15; I think girls (and boys) need to be taught about making good choices. I think we need to talk to our daughters about the consequences of drinking, doing drugs, or being in a situation where they’re not in control of their choices. But girls don’t bear the responsibility of a boy’s poor choice. Girls of the world do not carry the burden of not being raped.

Para-16(10); And when cases like Delhi rape case bring out victim-blaming and shaming rather than focusing on the fact that it doesn’t matter what the girl was doing with a boyfriend late night, what was she wearing, if she had sex in the past, or any of the factors that lead to a girl being so intoxicated she passed out, nothing, I repeat nothing, gives cause to rape.

Now, please tell me where my article discriminated “GENDER”. Yes, I did interpret   for a paradigm shift in the outlook of younger generations towards generating a sense of responsibility/accountability and respect within themselves in the society which can be done only by sitting with them and educating moral values. For your kind information, many among the victims of likabali rape case are my relatives. While demanding capital punishment even through article, can I be such bizarre thinker/narrow minded/gender discriminator? Moreover, I am a father of son and a daughter. Can’t I comprehend the pain of a daughter? The main premise behind my write up was to edify our sons a moral value so that they do not rape people and while doing so, girls of the society including mine, surely don’t get raped irrespective of their poor choices-what they wear, how they looked. Because girls don’t bear the responsibility of a boy’s poor choice. Why should they? However, while appreciating the critics, this time, I hope duo must have read unmistakably and understood that in fact, their opinions and mine are alike and also hope that they won’t use absurd word against any writer before they fetch out the factual gist of the article as the duo seemed to be a very learned personnel. With regards!

Yours,

Very good initiative

Dear Editor,

Almost every day in our dailies we find different sections of our society pleading the state government for attention towards poor road conditions. Why do we only wait for the state government alone?? I feel proud and appreciate the members of Yupo colony, Chandranagar for building an approach road (400 m) with their own hard earned money. I don’t appeal everyone to construct roads, but at least we can maintain our drainage systems. Poor drainage systems result in poor road conditions. Due to rampant and careless dumping of garbage in and around the drains, during heavy rainfall, water logging takes place. As a result, drain-water and garbage overflows on the road, thereby damaging it. As we have numerous forums and associations in every nook and corner of our state, we together can voluntarily take care of the drains and the roads of our locality. If we demand various rights and facilities from the state, we should also learn to willingly discharge some duties, and contribute towards the betterment of our state.

Yours,

Yab Nikum

Pachin colony is still in Stone Age

Dear Editor,

In this fast developing twin capital city, there exists a place which is on back gear towards the Stone Age. I am talking about the most and ever neglected Pachin Colony, Naharlagun. As like any other sector road of the capital, road condition of Pachin Colony is horrible and will beat any other colony road when it comes to being bad. At least we are happy that it cannot get worse as it has reached the height of being bad. We have been hoping for decades that with time the road condition will improve, but in vain. We even heard rumors about money being sanctioned for the purpose, but seem it truly was just a rumor. People residing on the either side of the road also played their much needed role of dumping excavated earth on the road; blocking drainage etc. Another rumor was about building a much needed motor able bridge in place of the present hanging bridge, but seems it too is a disappointment just like the previous one.

Through your esteemed daily I would like to request the concerned authority to look into the matter, as in case of emergency like medical and fire, it takes very long time for the help to reach.

Yours,

Tai Dora
